A Splash of Autumn Colour

Updated: Oct 11, 2022

The colours of Autmn are now turning to beautiful russets and golden hues, so lets celebrate with a riot of glorious colour!

I took this photograph at High Rocks, not far from Tunbridge Wells in Kent. It's a really beautiful place, especially at this time of year. If you fancy a visit, you can make a day of it and arrive in style on a steam train via the Spa Valley Railway! The line stops at High Rocks and then continues into Tunbridge Wells.

This beautiful lamp is at the entrance to the High Rocks Hotel, which you pass through as you make your way from the train platform to the High Rocks National Monument (which lies across the road). This area is home to acres of sandstone rocks that date back millions of years. Inter-linked with bridges, the rocks offer a lovely scenic walk.

Although my visit to High Rocks inspired my idea for this painting, I have actually sought out a slightly more ornamental looking lamp to replace the original to give it a bit more interest. However feel free to use the original lamp shape should you wish!

In this project we will be layering colour, trying to keep the edges soft in places to achieve a loose style. Then you can use a fine line pen to add detail to the ironwork.

If you would like to know a little more about this project, take a look at the teaser video below.

Happy painting!
